In 1830 on July the 18th, Our Blessed Mother appeared to Saint Catherine Labouré in Paris at her convent. Our Lady said this: "My child, God wishes to charge you with a mission. Come to the foot of the altar. There graces will be shed on all, great and small, who ask for them." Again, our Lady appeared to Saint Catherine in November of that same year. Catherine saw Our Lady standing on a globe with dazzling rays of light streaming from her outstretched hands surrounded by the words: "O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee." This vision became the face of the Miraculous Medal. The vision continued and she saw the reverse side. Twelve stars encircled the oval-shaped apparition. In the center was a large "M" from which arose a cross. Beneath this were images of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary pierced with a sword. Our Lady told Saint Catherine to "have a medal struck according to this model." She continued,"Those who wear it will receive great graces; abundant graces will be given to those who have confidence."
