Veneration to Our Blessed Mother under the title of "the Miraculous Medal" began after she appeared three separate times to St. Catherine Labouré in France in 1830. In the first visit, a mysterious child stood at the foot of the sister's bed and told her to get up. The child said, "Sister Labouré, come to the chapel. The Blessed Virgin is waiting for you." Following the child's introduction - twice, "Here is the Blessed Virgin", Catherine rushed to Our Blessed Mother who was seated on the chair and knelt at her feet. Catherine rested her hands and knees on the Mother of God. The second time the Blessed Virgin appeared to Catherine was November 27th, 1830, as she was meditating in the Chapel. Catherine saw two living paintings, one fading into the other, in which the Blessed Virgin stood on a half-globe, her feet crushing the head of a serpent. In this first image, Our Lady held a small golden globe topped with a cross, which she lifted toward heaven. Catherine heard, "This globe represents the entire world and every person." In the second image, beautiful rays of light streamed from the Blessed Virgin's open hands, which were covered with jeweled rings. At the same moment, St. Catherine heard a voice say, "These rays are a symbol of the graces that I pour out on those who ask them of me." Then, an oval formed around the apparition, and Catherine saw the invocation emblazoned in gold letters shaped in a semi-circle. "O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to you."   The Blessed Virgin also told her to "have a medal made in this image. For those who wear it with confidence, there will be abundant graces."

Did you know that the image of Our Lady on the front of the Miraculous Medal is referred to as "Our Lady of Grace?" When we pray "Hail Mary, Full of Grace", we are reminded that she is filled with grace because Jesus {who is the fount of all grace} is with her.

This beautiful blue and silver capped Our Lady of Grace Rosary shows Our Lady of Grace on the front of the center medal. On the reverse side you will see the letter "M" surmounted with a little cross; two hearts below the cross, one crowned with thorns and the other pierced with a sword; and twelve stars around the medal.
